Reflection from the Administrator:
My
dear parishioners, Our Three-in-One Parish Evening, held last weekend on July 24th, was a wonderful celebration. The sun came out after the cloudburst; the Time Capsule was blessed
and buried; we shared cold soda, delicious appetizers, and lively conversation, and had live music, courtesy of Eric Covino. Special thanks to Bob Payette and Ron & Rose Bossie for the wonderful
audio-visual presentation. Many thanks to everyone for their cooperation and support! A very special thank you to the committee: Kathy Coon for the site work and rock; Pat
Bell for the landscape design; Len Kostek for the trim work; Bob O'Neil for obtaining the vault; Joe Barile for the moisture proofing; Nancy Mignault, Wendy Majcher and Dot Gauthier for
organizing the party; and Jan Clancy, Eleanor Milller and Mary Ann Melgey for coordinating the capsule contents. Celebrations help our faith community become a faith family. Thank you
for making this happen.
Yours Sincerely in Christ,
Fr. Joe

Reflection from the Administrator:
My dear parishioners,
For the past two and a half years our Parish has been blessed by the service of our parish sexton, Bob Edwards. Bob, however, will soon be moving to Texas. The
community of St. Catherine wishes Bob all the best:
"Thank you, Bob, we will miss you! God bless you in your new home and this new part of your life."
We would like to fill the sexton position as soon as
possible so that the new sexton will have some training time with Bob to learn the details of the position. We are not currently advertising the position because I have received referrals from some
parishioners and have heard directly from others who have heard of the vacancy. Please contact the parish office at 860-887-9966 if you or someone you know might have an interest in the position.
Sincerely,
Fr. Joe

Reflection from
the Administrator:
My dear parishioners,
This weekend Gospel reminds me of a story about a newly
ordained young priest fresh out of seminary who was assigned to his first parish in a small, farming community. Each Sunday he preached exegetical sermons that had nothing to do with the lives of the
people. In fact, over the years the village congregation had become quite patient and tolerant, gifted with the task of training young priests in the realities of church life. Months went by and then
one Sunday the elderly sacristan who prepared the sanctuary for the Mass left a note on the pulpit. Read John 12:21. That is all it said, John 12:21. Well, the young priest arrived in the sanctuary
to prepare for the morning’s Mass, he saw the note on the pulpit which read “John 12:21.” A curious thing to find in the pulpit, he thought. Therefore, he quickly thumbed
through his Bible and found the passage, which read: “Sir, we would like to see Jesus.” In today’s gospel story while Martha was busy preparing to feed Jesus, Mary wanted to see
Jesus and listen to him. Fr.

you for only eight of your fifty year history, you are enfolded in my heart, and you will always be “my” parish. In honor of your anniversary and in thanksgiving to God for your deep
and vibrant spirit, I have sent a donation to Call to Action, a national lay Catholic organization that strives to keep alive the spirit of Vatican II. Love and blessings, S. Mary

THOUGHTS ON GIVING 15th
Sunday in Ordinary Time
“Go and do likewise.” - Luke 10:37
This was Jesus’ simple command to all of us at the end of the Good Samaritan story. How do we do
“likewise?” By taking the time to help when we are needed. By sharing our skills. By reaching into our pockets when financial help is needed. In short, by being a good steward. Reflection from the Administrator:
My dear parishioners,
In today’s Gospel, a scribe asked Jesus a very basic religious question: “What should I do
to inherit eternal life?” In answer to the question, Jesus directed the Scribe’s attention to the Sacred Scriptures. The scriptural answer is “love God and express
it by loving your neighbor.” However, to the scribe the word “neighbor” meant another Scribe or Pharisee – never a Samaritan or a Gentile. Hence, the Scribe
insisted on further clarification of the word “neighbor.” So Jesus told him the parable of the Good Samaritan. The parable clearly indicated that a “neighbor” is anyone who
needs help and anyone who gives that help. Thus, the correct approach is not to ask the question “Who is my neighbor?” but rather to ask, “Am I a good neighbor to
others?” The final command of Jesus, the Heavenly Good Samaritan, given during the Last Supper was: “Love others as I have loved you” because the invisible God dwells in every human
being.
Yours sincerely in Christ,
Fr.
Joe

THOUGHTS ON GIVING 13TH Sunday in Ordinary Time
“For you were called to freedom, brothers and sisters. But do not use this freedom as an opportunity for the flesh; rather
serve one another through love.” - Galatians 5:13 We like to celebrate the fact that we are free to “live the good life.” But Jesus calls us to a different kind of freedom.
St. Paul reminds us that Jesus sets us free so that we can serve one another, share our gifts and promote God’s work here on earth.

Welcome to Most Rev. Thomas Thiruthalil,C.M., India for MCP in our Parish
My dear parishioners, It will be our joy to welcome Most Rev. Thomas Thiruthalil, Bishop of the Diocese of Balasore, India to our
parish in the last weekend of June for the Annual MCP. He is my own Bishop. Diocese of Balasore was a part of the Archdiocese of Calcutta until 1990 when Balasore was erected as a Diocese.
Although there are 25,000 Catholics in the Diocese of Balasore, its work extends among seven million people. There are 45 priests, a good number of women Religious and catechists rendering service to
everyone in the region irrespective of religion and race. The Diocese has 30 Parish/Mission stations, one hospital, 16 dispensaries, three technical institutions, 28 hostels, two Minor Seminaries and
14 schools. These resources, human and material, are far too short of what is required to carry on the evangelization and social development work that is needed. The Diocese makes every effort
to raise as much resources as possible locally. It depends on the support, generosity, and prayers of Catholics across the world such as you, to continue the work of Christ in Balasore,
India. Yours sincerely, Fr.
Joe

EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS
As
you have become aware by Bishop Cote, the restoration of the cup and sign of peace began last weekend. Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion should continue to observe appropriate sanitary
measures in distributing the Eucharist. We ask ministers of the cup to please come forward at Masses as you see necessary throughout the summer. On the next minister schedule for the
fall, Tammy will again add names for ministers of the cup. May God continue to bless you in this important ministry!
CHILEAN EARTHQUAKE RELIEF SPECIAL COLLECTION June 19 & 20, 2010 The 8.8 magnitude earthquake that struck Chile on February 27, 2010, has claimed hundreds of lives and destroyed countless homes,
churches, and schools and has left millions without the most basic necessities of life. The Daughters of the Holy Spirit have a facility in Putnam and many of their members have served the
Diocese of Norwich in a variety of Parishes, Schools and Ministries. Sr. Sally Tolles, a member of the secular branch of the Daughters of the Holy Spirit and Coordinator of the Diocesan
Tribunal Office recently spoke with members of her community in Chile to find out what the Diocese can do to help alleviate the suffering of our brothers and sisters whose lives have been affected by
the earthquake. Bishop cote has authorized a special collection for the Chilean Earthquake Relief Fund which will be taken up next weekend at all the Masses. Please take home an
envelope located at the doors and return it next weekend with your donation. Please be generous. Thank you. ___________________________________________________
Insert Thank You Letter From Father Joe:
Thank
you note from the Administrator Alive with the faith and zeal of our forebears, our parish family cherishes the sacrifices and commitment of the Bishops, Priests, Religious and laity who with
their foresight, leadership and generosity to build up this wonderful parish family of St. Catherine of Siena. What goes into any celebration? Planning, hard work, emotions, people; usually
food; sometimes music; and always money. Our 50th anniversary celebration is no different: many people helped plan it; many people were involved in executing it; and the dear Lord
knows there were all kinds of emotions involved! The most important part of our celebration, however, is the people. For fear of inadvertently leaving out a name, I will not
thank individuals, with one exception: our Bishop Most Reverend Michael Cote, for celebrating this thanksgiving Holy Mass and giving a very inspiring homily. Bishop Cote is a successor to the
Apostles in whom the work of Our Savior, Jesus Christ, lives and grows. He is our father in Christ. Bishop, your presence shows your love for the people of St. Catherine of Siena. Thank you for
making our celebration extraordinary. May I take this opportunity to congratulate the Bishop as he celebrates 35 years of his priesthood. Congratulations, Bishop. Additionally, I would
like to thank every member of the Anniversary Celebration committee; in particular, the liturgy, the booklet, Ladies Guild and the K of C, and each and every individual who helped by
donating their time, talents and treasure. This celebration has been possible because of the hard work of each and every one of you. I would like to thank all who attended: the
parishioners, the visitors, the religious, and the clergy. Many of you have been active members of this parish during the past 50 years and, as such, had a part of bringing our parish along the
road to this jubilee celebration. A special word of thank you to all my brother priests for taking time to concelebrate this anniversary mass. In this year for priests, I would like to
congratulate you for your dedication. Thank you. I like to acknowledge the beautiful choir, which made the celebration more prayerful. We cannot forget our wonderful altar servers and
greeters. Thank you. We will continue our celebration in Siena Hall soon after the mass, where we will acknowledge the priests and the religious and a few dignitaries who worked in the past
here at St. Catherine of Siena. Please join us downstairs. Thank you. Yours sincerely,
Fr. Joe

Reflection from
the Administrator:
My dear Parishioners,
Today, we celebrate the solemn feast of Corpus Christi. Corpus
Christi is the celebration of the abiding presence of a loving God as Emmanuel – God with us – in order to give collective thanks to our Lord living with us in the Eucharist. This feast
gives us an occasion to learn more about the importance and value of the “Real Presence” so that we may appreciate the Sacrament better and receive maximum benefit from it. Jesus
instituted the Holy Eucharist during his Last Supper. Jesus commanded his disciples to repeat it. We explain the real presence of Jesus in the Holy Eucharist by “transubstantiation” which
means that the substance of the consecrated bread and wine is changed to the risen Jesus’ glorified body and blood by the action of the Holy Spirit and its accidents like color, shape, taste
etc. remain the same. "The Catholic Church teaches that in the Eucharist, the Body and Blood of the God-man are really, truly, substantially, and abidingly present together with his soul and
divinity by reason of the Transubstantiation of the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ. This takes place in the unbloody sacrifice of the the Mass."
Yours
sincerely, Fr.
Joe

June 4, 2010
My dear sisters & brothers in Christ,
On
Saturday, June 12, 2010, at 4:00 p.m., we will gather together as the parish family of St. Catherine of Siena Church to celebrate with the Most Reverend Michael R. Cote, Bishop of Norwich, the Golden
Jubilee of our parish Church. Alive with the faith and zeal of our forebears, our parish family cherishes the sacrifices and commitment of the Bishops, Priests, Sisters, and laity who with
foresight, leadership, and generosity responded to the spiritual needs of the faithful to provide for them this place of worship. As we celebrate this milestone anniversary, we will remember the
leadership of Bishop Bernard J. Flanagan, the first Bishop of Norwich, and Monsignor Alfred Driscoll and Monsignor Vincent Murphy, priests who served as Pastors of Saint Mary Church in Jewett
City. They were our first pastors while we were still a mission. We owe so much to all of them and to the generosity of the William F. O’Neil family whose generous transfer of
property, in 1956, gave this parish the land upon which our Church and rectory are located. On April 24, 1960 Bishop Hines, the Bishop of Norwich, dedicated St. Catherine of Siena Church. His
successor, Bishop Reilly, recognized our growth and vitality as a parish. On November 1, 1975, he established St. Catherine of Siena Mission as a Parish with its own Pastor, Father Joseph
Finnerty. Next Saturday, we will welcome Bishop Cote who will preside at our Golden Jubilee Liturgy and lead us in our thanksgiving to God for the blessings of these past fifty years. For like his
predecessors, Bishop Cote is a successor to the Apostles in whom the work of Our Savior, Jesus Christ, lives and grows. Bishop Cote is our Teacher, Priest, and Chief Shepherd. He is our
Father in Christ. Daily, but, in a special way on June 12th, we will honor the memory of the Bishops, priests, and faithful who collaborated in this great work of building this Church and those
good people who continue to provide for this parish family. We thank God for the faith and dedication of those whose dedication and diligence have brought us to this day of rejoicing and to
this great jubilee. I would like to take a moment to thank all the generous people who donated, pledged or gave gifts to the St. Catherine of Siena 50th Anniversary Celebration. Your contributions
have helped to renovate and restore a historical landmark where families have worshipped for generations. I am deeply grateful to all the parishioners, benefactors and well-wishers for their time,
talents and treasure towards this Jubilee Celebration. Through the intercession of St. Catherine of Siena, may God shower His abundant blessings on all of us on this special day and for the years
to come.
Gratefully yours in Christ,
Father Joseph T. Chacko

Reflection from
the Administrator:
My dear Parishioners, Today we celebrate the feast of the most Holy Trinity. The mystery
of the most Holy Trinity is a basic doctrine of faith in Christianity, understandable not with our heads but with our hearts. It teaches us that there are three distinct persons in one God sharing
the same divine nature. Our mind cannot grasp this doctrine, which teaches that 1+ 1+ 1 = 1 and not 3. But we believe in this mystery because Jesus who is God taught it clearly, the evangelists
recorded it, the Fathers of the Church tried to explain it and the Councils of Nicaea and Constantinople defined it as dogma of Christian faith. Importance in Christian life: 1) All prayers
in the Church begin in the name of the Holy Trinity and end glorifying the Trinity. 2) All sacraments are administered (we are baptized, confirmed, anointed) in the Holy Trinity’s Name. 3)
Church bells ring thrice inviting us to remember and pray to the Holy Trinity. 4) We bless ourselves and the priest blesses us in the name of the Holy Trinity.
Have a wonderful Memorial Day

THOUGHTS ON GIVING Trinity Sunday
“But when he comes, the Spirit of truth, he will guide you to all truth.” - John 16:13 Jesus sent the Holy
Spirit to help us know the truth. So why not ask the Holy Spirit the truth about your stewardship? Are you sharing your time and talent with God and others? Do you give a fair amount of your treasure
to do the work of the Lord? Can you hear the Spirit’s answer to those questions in your heart now? What more is He calling you to do?

To be read at all parishes in New London County on the weekend of May 29 & 30, 2010.
My dear sisters and brothers in Christ,
The semi-annual collection for Saint
Bernard School will be taken up at all Masses next weekend, June 5 and 6, 2010. This appeal is an opportunity for all of us to share in the good work of this excellent Catholic School. It
is also an effective means of assisting students at Saint Bernard and of showing our support for the members of the administration, faculty, and staff of Saint Bernard who daily give of themselves
for the enrichment of their students.
As you know, Saint Bernard is a seven year school under the supervision of a Headmaster, Mr. William McKenna. With grades six through twelve, Saint
Bernard offers students an excellent program of Catholic formation and spiritual development based on the Xaverian model of Catholic education. In very many positive ways, Saint Bernard is a
unique institution of academic, apostolic, religious, and athletic formation and education. Today, in various walks of life, Saint Bernard graduates enrich both the community and the
Church. In recent years, five (5) alumni were ordained to the Priesthood for service to the faithful in the Diocese of Norwich in very responsible positions.
By making a sacrificial
gift, you will share in the challenging yet rewarding work of educating our youth in a Catholic environment modeled on the Gospel of Jesus Christ and the teachings of our Church.
Through
prayer and with the continued generosity of parishioners in New London County, Saint Bernard will carry on the mission of Jesus Christ to teach the Gospel to our youth. With your financial
support and your prayers, Saint Bernard School will be able to maintain its high standard of Catholic formation of our youth.
May the Lord bless your generosity!
Sincerely yours in
Christ,

sent to the rectory.
Reflection from the Administrator: My dear Parishioners, As you might have noticed, our church parking lot is being fixed. It is going to look wonderful as we
celebrate the Anniversary of our church. I would like to explain about the money involved in this work. We obtained three quotes and chose M&M, 331 Valley View Rd, Sterling, CT. This company
gave us the most reasonable price of $ 4,500. In the maintenance account, we have $2,252. We will be receiving approximately $1,000 from the Booklet Committee because the memorials and ads we
sold generated more income than the cost of printing. We have, therefore, $3,252. That means we need $1,248 to complete the repair work of the parking lot. At the call to build a parish in
Preston, the parishioners rallied. So, too, when the call came to build a rectory, to renovate the parish, and to purchase a pipe organ. Every time the parishioners saw a need in their parish, they
were always very, very generous with their time, talent, and treasure. Please know that your generosity is very much appreciated. Unfortunately, however, the physical plant of our parish
continues to age and deteriorate. In keeping with the spirit of maintaining our St. Catherine of Siena faith center, if you are able and willing, any donations toward meeting the balance needed to
repair the parking lot would be gratefully received. Thank you so much for your generosity. God bless you. Gratefully yours in the Lord,
Fr.

us the way.

Reflection from the Administrator:
My dear Parishioners,
What do you remember about life in 1960? Some of you might be cherishing the memories. Do you remember
women wearing a hat to church—or a hanky, if they forgot their hat? Do you remember men tipping their hats when passing a woman on the street? Do you remember the music and TV shows of
1960? Getting “dressed up” to go into the city. No stores being open on Sundays? Family dinners? Do you feel that the old values are being left behind? Those
traditions are being lost? Those religious beliefs are being ignored? Ever feel that technology is leaving you behind? Those teenagers can program the digital clocks and you cannot? That news
spreads almost before it happens. That time is racing by. That ATM cards, video games, Twitter, email, Google, blogs are from another world. If we feel this way in 2010, what will the
world be like in 2060 - The Year of the Centenary of our Church? We cannot predict what 2060 will bring, as change comes about so very quickly, but we CAN remind the parishioners of the 2060 St.
Catherine of Siena Parish what the parishioners of 2010 held near and dear. Join the fun: we are going to make a parish time capsule, designed to be opened in 2060. Watch the bulletin for more
details to follow…………………………..
Have a great weekend, Fr.

My dear brothers and sisters in Christ,
Again we have dedicated
the May issue of the Four County Catholic to the particular vocation of the diocesan priesthood. I just had the honor recently of ordaining one of our seminarians, Henry Agudelo to the Holy Order of
Deacon and I presently look forward to later this month on May 29, 2010, when I will ordain Rev. Mr. Christopher Feeney to the Holy Priesthood for service here in the Diocese of Norwich.
Rev.
Mr. Henry Agudelo will continue his studies at Holy Apostles Seminary in Cromwell as he prepares for his final year of study at the seminary. Rev. Mr. Christopher Feeney graduated earlier this month
from Mount St. Mary Seminary in Emmitsburg, Maryland where he has been studying during the past four years. The monies collected during this particular appeal collection assist the diocese greatly in
paying the formal education of the men who are being prepared to serve as your priests.
This coming fall the Diocese of Norwich will have three men entering their first year of major seminary
studies: Mr. Michael Salerno from Mystic, Connecticut, Mr. Ian Bothur from Columbia Connecticut, and Mr. Jonathan Ficara from Moodus, Connecticut. Beginning his second year of major seminary
studies at Blessed John XXIII National Seminary in Weston, Massachusetts, will be Mr. Brian Maxwell who is originally from Maine. Just recently accepted to be sponsored by the diocese for studies and
beginning his Pre-Theology studies at Mount St. Mary seminary in Emmitsburg Maryland will be Mr. Jeffery Ellis who is originally from Willimantic Connecticut. Therefore, we once again will have six
men studying, praying, and preparing to be your future priests here in Eastern Connecticut.
With gratitude for the many sacrifices you have made on behalf of the diocese in the past and
continue to make because of the depth of your faith, I again ask each of you to help in making the formation and education process for those men mentioned above more affordable for our diocesan
family.
We as the family of God in the Norwich Diocese continue to be blessed with the need to educate and form the men who are responding to Christ’s call to priesthood. This May 22nd
and 23rd I ask you to give what you can to the annual Seminary Education Fund Appeal. If you find yourself in a position of not being able to offer something financially during these difficult times,
please continue with the favor of praying for a continuing increase of vocations to the diocesan priesthood and the religious life.
With heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for
the gift of your faith, I thank you all for your prayers and whatever assistance you are able to give to this appeal.
Sincerely yours in
Christ,
MOST REVEREND MICHAEL R. COTE, D.D.
Bishop of Norwich

Reflection from the Administrator:
My dear Parishioners, The origin of “Mothers’ Day.” Anna M. Jarvis (1864-1948) first suggested the national
observance of an annual day honoring all mothers because she had loved her own mother so dearly. At a memorial service for her mother on May 10, 1908, Miss Jarvis gave a carnation (her mother’s
favorite flower) to each person who attended. Within the next few years, the idea of a day to honor mothers gained popularity, and Mothers’ Day was observed in a number of large cities in the
U.S. On May 9, 1914, by an act of Congress, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May as Mothers’ Day. He established the day as a time for “public expression of our
love and reverence for the mothers of our country.” By then it had become customary to wear white carnations to honor departed mothers and red to honor the living, a custom that continues to
this day. Mothers should be saluted 1) for their tenacious and sacrificial love for their children 2) for the tremendous impact they have on their children and 3) for our intimate relationship
with them from birth to death. Happy Mother’s Day. Fr.

Reflection from the Administrator:
The History of St. Catherine of Siena
Catherine was born in Siena, Italy, on March 25, 1347. Her parents were Giacomo di Benincasa, a cloth-dyer, and his wife, Lapa.
As a tertiary or lay affiliate, Catherine lived at home rather than in a convent. Far from leading to laxity, this arrangement
allowed her to practice austerities that a prioress would probably not have permitted.
She is especially famous for fasting and practicing physical mortifications in ways that sound unhealthy today—modern scholar
Rudolph Bell uses her life as an example in his book Holy Anorexia.
In about 1366 Catherine experienced what she described in her letters as a Mystical Marriage with Jesus, and in 1370 she received a
series of visions of Hell, Purgatory, and Heaven. After these visions she heard a command to abandon her withdrawn life and enter the public life of the world.
Catherine began to write letters to those in authority, begging for peace between the republics and principalities of Italy and for
the return of the papacy from Avignon to Rome. She had a detailed correspondence with Pope Gregory XI, asking him to reform the clergy and the administration of the Papal States.
In June of 1376, Catherine went to Avignon herself as ambassador of Florence to make peace with the Papal States, but was
unsuccessful. She impressed the Pope so much; however, that he returned his administration to Rome in January of 1377. In the Great Schism of 1378 she supported Pope Urban VI, who summoned her to
Rome. She lived there until her death on April 29, 1380.
Pope Pius II canonized Catherine in 1461, and her letters are considered one of the great works of early Tuscan literature. Her
feast day is April 29th. She is the patron saint of fire prevention, pestilence, and headaches.

Reflection from the Administrator:
My
dear Parishioners, 2010 Annual Bishop’s Appeal “The Lord is my Light…” (Psalm 27:1) Each and every household is challenged to be a part of the life of the work of
the Catholic Church. We can do this through a generous and sacrificial pledge to the Annual Bishop’s Appeal. Every one of us is a beneficiary in one way or another of the ABA. There is a great
satisfaction in knowing that you have had a part in the training of men for the priesthood, in reaching out to the poor, the disenfranchised, and the helpless, in sharing the light of faith through
education programs, in prison ministry, in keeping Catholic presence alive for college students and the many other ways in which the Annual Bishop’s Appeal serves God’s Church. Please be
a part of this and know the joy of joining our brother and sisters in faith across the Catholic Diocese of Norwich in building the Kingdom of God. In the next few weeks you will be receiving a
letter, brochure and pledge envelope from Bishop Cote. Please take the time to prayerfully consider what you are able give in support of our Diocesan Church. Thank you. Gratefully yours in
the Risen Lord, Fr.

A
Women’s Spring Retreat with Sister Patty is being sponsored by the Ladies Guild. It will be on May 22nd from 9:30am-1:30pm. Lunch is included in $15 registration fee. Registration
begins May
1st.
2010 Annual Bishop’s Appeal Commitment Weekend for the 2010 Annual Bishop’s Appeal will be conducted next weekend in our Parish. Please prayerfully
consider what you, as an individual and a family, can pledge to support the educational, spiritual and outreach services offered by our Diocese, as well as provide for the education and formation of
our seminarians. These programs and ministries serve people in ways that we as an individual Parish could never do. The ABA is a family effort. With your gift we can do it. You should
have received a letter and a pledge card from Bishop Cote. If you have not already mailed in your pledge card, please bring it with you next Saturday/Sunday when you come to Mass and place it
in the collection basket. Thank you.
THOUGHTS ON GIVING 4th Sunday of Easter “The
disciples were filled with joy and the Holy Spirit.” - Acts 13:52 Because the disciples had heard Our Lord’s call, they were able to spread the message of the Gospel with
strength and vitality. We, too, can experience that same joy if we take time to listen to God, to ask for His direction and to allow the Holy Spirit to guide our lives and our decisions.

Reflection from the Administrator:
My
dear Parishioners, With the good weather finally coming our way many people are now working outside sprucing up lawns and preparing to plant gardens. As I look outside on the church and rectory
grounds I see the need to rake the lawn, fill in some of the holes with soil and plant grass seed, cut back on the brush, plant flowers and maybe even develop a small garden to grow vegetables.
I used to do this work a lot at my home. My father had a large garden and taught me a great deal about the joy of growing our own food. I was wondering if there is somebody out there in the parish
who can give a few hours of their time and talent to do some of this maintenance work on our grounds. Having a garden is an afterthought, but the grounds work and cleaning around are a
necessity for any home. If a few people could volunteer a bit of time, the work will not be a burden on any one person. Please consider, if you can help us make St. Catherine of Siena
Church and Rectory look more beautiful, it would be greatly appreciated. As you know, many traveling folks look at our beautiful church as they drive to the casino and back. Shall we join in and make
it a more wonderful view? Thank you!
Gratefully yours in the Risen Lord, Fr.

2010 Annual Bishop’s Appeal The 2010 Annual Bishop’s Appeal (ABA) will be held in every Parish throughout the Diocese, on May 1/2, 2010. Your ABA pledge is
part of your personal commitment to Christian Stewardship; giving thanks to God by returning a portion of the blessings God has given you. Our local Church sees God in the hundreds of thousands of
people it takes care of every year by teaching, sheltering and caring for all who come to it for help. At times, the needs of many seem overwhelming to us, but like Christ himself, we approach such
need with prayers of faith and hope in God. May your pledge to the 2010 Annual Bishop’s Appeal bring “good news” to those who gather at the doors of the many ministries served by
this annual appeal. Thank you.

Reflection from the Administrator:
My
dear friends in Christ, I want to take this opportunity to express my thanks to all who made who made our Holy Week and Easter liturgies such wonderful celebrations. It is a marvelous time of the
year for the parish. We celebrate the core mystery of our faith and so many people give of their time and talent to plan and execute our liturgies. Those who come put themselves into it and truly
appreciate how the church looks and feels as they come to pray together. The decorations are beautiful, and many of you commented on them. A lot of work goes into preparing the church for Easter and
I thank them for their effort. Our music ministry was inspiring and uplifting at all services. We are blessed to have many dedicated and talented people in the music ministry. Our thanks go out to
them. We should be appreciative of all the ministries who serve us at these worship services. Our servers came to rehearsals and prepared themselves to serve with grace and dignity. We don’t
often appreciate the person in the pew. The assembly is an essential part of each liturgy. They are not just passive listeners and watchers, but people of faith who actively pray together making up a
dynamic assembly of the faithful who worship as one. My thanks to everyone. A special thanks to Knights of Columbus for organizing the Easter Egg Hunt for the little ones in the parish. I truly
appreciate your prayers, Easter cards, gifts and food on Easter. You are in my prayers and Masses. May you have a Holy and Blessed Easter Season! With love and Prayers in the Risen
Lord, Fr.
Joe
2010 Annual Bishop’s Appeal The Annual Bishop’s Appeal (ABA) is our way of supporting the work of the Catholic Church, both in our parish and throughout

reaching out to the poor, the disenfranchised, and the helpless, in sharing the light of faith through education programs, in keeping a Catholic presence alive for college students and the many other

Bishop’s Appeal. Thank you.
THOUGHTS ON GIVING 2nd Sunday of Easter “Jesus said to them again, ‘Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send
you.’” - John 20:21
Peace – the first gift of the risen Lord. As Jesus sent
the apostles out into the world to share His peace and Good News, He also sends us. The Annual Bishop’s Appeal provides countless opportunities to share His peace with our brothers and sisters
next door to us and in the far corners of the Diocese. In giving to help support these programs, you will receive the peace of Christ.
NEXT WEEK’S READINGS
First
Reading: Acts 5:27-32, 40b-41 Second Reading: Revelation 5:11-14 Gospel: John 21:1-19
INSERT: DIVINE MERCY SUNDAY
The
Feast of the Divine Mercy or Divine Mercy Sunday falls on the Octave of Easter (the Sunday immediately following Easter). It is dedicated to the devotion to the Divine Mercy promoted by St. Faustina,
and is based upon an entry in St. Faustina's diary stating that anyone who participates in the Mass and receives the sacraments of confession and Eucharist on this day is assured by Jesus of full
remission of sins. According to the notebooks of Saint Faustina, Jesus made the following statements about this day: "On that day the very depths of My tender mercy are open. I pour out a
whole ocean of graces upon those souls who approach the fount of My mercy. The soul that will go to Confession and receive Holy Communion shall obtain complete forgiveness of sins and punishment. On
that day all the divine floodgates through which grace flow are opened. Let no soul fear to draw near to Me, even though its sins be as scarlet. My mercy is so great that no mind, be it of man or of
angel, will be able to fathom it throughout all eternity." (Diary of Saint Faustina, 699)
The devotion was celebrated unofficially in many places for some years. On
April 30, 2000 (Divine Mercy Sunday of that year), Pope John Paul II canonized St. Faustina and designated the Sunday after Easter as the Second Sunday of
Easter or the Sunday of the Divine Mercy (Dominica II Paschae seu de divina misericordia) in the General Roman Calendar, with effect from the following
year. He also decreed a plenary indulgence associated with this devotion. Pope John Paul II said he felt a closeness to St. Faustina when he was writing Dives
in misericordia [1]. He died during the vigil of the Divine Mercy Sunday 2005. “The Lord of Divine Mercy” a drawing of Jesus based on the vision given to St. Faustina,
shows Jesus raising his right hand in a gesture of blessing, with his left hand on his chest from which gush forth two rays, one red and one white. The picture contains the
message "Jesus, I trust in You!" (Jezu ufam Tobie). The rays streaming out have symbolic meaning: red for the blood of Jesus, which is the life of souls and white for the water,
which justifies souls. The whole image is symbolic of the mercy, forgiveness and love of God.
