Many years ago a few members of our parish had a dream of creating a Memorial Garden where we could go to sit quietly to pray and reflect
on a lost loved one, or just sit and enjoy the peace and tranquility of our parish surroundings, but like many other ideas, time and money left the dream unfulfilled.
On February 16, 1996, St. Catherine of Siena Parish community suffered the tragic loss of Michael Prue, the husband of Mary and the son of
Florence and Bill Prue. In lieu of flowers for Michael's funeral, memorial contributions were given to St. Catherine of Siena Parish.
Shortly after the funeral, Father Jim met with the family to discuss how best to use these contributions, and all readily agreed that a
garden would be a perfect use for the memorial contributions as Michael had spent many years mowing our lawns and working with his Mom and Dad on our beautiful flowers. After meeting with the parish council,
approval was given to the preliminary plans as presented by the Prue's to begin work on a garden that is located on the hill behind the church, in an existing grove of trees.
Excavation of the land, tree removal, wall building, and grass planting progressed over the summer thanks to the tireless efforts of the
Prue family and Tony Bassette. This fall with the help of Ceil Cubanski and her son Douglas the first shrubs, and hundreds of spring bulbs were planted. Excavation and site work was provided by the W. W. Benjamin
Co. All of the stones for the wall were supplied by Duaine and Roland Nye. Due to the generous contributions of the above individuals, costs thus far have been kept to a minimum.
At the Parish Council meeting on November 4, 1996, it was agreed that an Ad Hoc Committee be formed to bring the garden to completion and
ready for dedication in the spring. Some of the items to be decided include:
1. Naming the Garden - as it will be a Memorial Garden for all of our deceased loved ones.
2. Memorial Markers
3. Additional Plantings.
4. Determination of what will be the focal point of the garden to be placed on center of the wall. (i.e., crucifix, statue)
5. Means of raising additional funds to complete the above.
We are asking for representation from each parish organizations and other members of our parish community that can provide input regarding
any of the above items, or anything that we might have overlooked. Please call the Prue's at 887-8591, Mary Lou Parkhurst at 889-5411 or the rectory to indicate your willingness to help. We would like to begin
gathering names and information now and schedule a meeting for the end of January.
We invite all of you to take a walk out to the garden to see how much has already been done, and to see if there is something you can do
to help us fulfill this dream, but we especially want you to know this garden will be a place for all of us to remember our deceased loved ones.
(This was signed by Mary Lou Parkhurst, who was the Parish Council President)
